The city that sleeps underwater: a Menorcan legend in the Cova de s’Aigua

The legend of Parella: an enchanted city off the coast of Ciutadella

They say that on the night of San Juan, if you look west from the coast of Ciutadella de Menorca, you might glimpse a city floating above the transparent sea: a bluish, blurred place that awakens for a few seconds from the ocean depths. This is Parella, the enchanted city that, according to folklore, only reappears on this magical night of the Menorcan calendar.

The legend says the city will emerge only under special conditions: if seven men named Juan and seven women named Juana, strangers to each other, meet by the sea, the spell will break and Parella will rise briefly, echoing the distant sound of its bells.

While this enchanted city is not directly connected to the Cova de s’Aigua, its proximity to Cala Blanca adds a magical atmosphere. The silence of the cave, the underground lake, and its suspended stillness evoke the same mystical feeling found in Menorcan legends. As if a piece of Parella lies beneath those waters.
