Old town, heritage and harbour: a guide to planning your visit and choosing what to see in the time you have.

If you are planning a visit and wondering what to see in Ciutadella de Menorca, this guide brings together its main sights: Plaça des Born, the Cathedral of Santa María, Ses Voltes, the markets and the harbour. You will also find a route around the town and an optional trip to Punta Nati.

Many of the main attractions are close to one another, making them easy to explore on foot. A morning or an afternoon is enough for a first stroll; a full day gives you more time to visit monuments, enjoy the local food and discover the harbour.

10 places to discover in and around Ciutadella

These are the stops covered in this guide. The first nine are in the town; Punta Nati is an additional suggestion beyond the urban area.

  1. Plaça des Born
  2. Cathedral of Santa María de Ciutadella
  3. Ses Voltes
  4. Mercat des Peix and Plaça de la Llibertat
  5. Ciutadella harbour
  6. Castell de Sant Nicolau
  7. Convent de Sant Agustí
  8. Streets and palaces of the old town
  9. Plaça des Pins and the surrounding area
  10. Punta Nati at sunset, as an optional trip

Here is what you can expect to find at each stop.

1. Plaça des Born, a good place to start

Plaça des Born is one of Ciutadella’s most recognisable places and a good starting point for getting to know the town.

The square is home to the obelisk and buildings such as the Town Hall and Teatre des Born. Its location makes it easy to continue into the old town and towards some of its main monuments.

Instead of simply passing through, take a few minutes to look around and use the square as the starting point for exploring the town on foot.

2. Cathedral of Santa María de Ciutadella

Right in the historic centre stands the Cathedral of Santa María de Ciutadella, one of the town’s most important monuments.

Its Catalan Gothic architecture and large single nave are two of its most striking features. It is a particularly interesting stop if you would also like to discover Ciutadella’s heritage inside its historic buildings.

You can find more information on the official Menorca Cathedral website. Before going inside, check the opening times and visiting arrangements; afterwards, continue your walk through the streets around the cathedral.

3. Ses Voltes and Ciutadella’s old town

One of the best things to do in Ciutadella is simply to walk.

Ses Voltes is recognisable by its arcades, which line the walk past shops and historic buildings. From here, you can continue through the streets of Ciutadella de Menorca’s old town and discover little squares along the way.

This area is especially pleasant early in the morning or towards the end of the afternoon.

If you would like to enjoy this part of town without relying on a car, Sagitario Hostal Ciutadella is right in the historic centre, very close to the cathedral. Its location lets you step outside your accommodation and start exploring some of Ciutadella’s main sights on foot.

4. Mercat des Peix and Plaça de la Llibertat

Visiting the markets is also a way to discover everyday life in Ciutadella.

The Mercat des Peix, in Plaça de la Llibertat, is part of the food market in the town centre. It is a good stop for discovering local produce and combining heritage with food.

Here, your visit goes beyond seeing monuments. You can discover local produce, stop for a drink or simply take in the atmosphere of the town.

If you would also like your visit to coincide with one of Ciutadella’s street markets, check the municipal information on markets and fairs. It lists the location, days and season of each market so you can plan your visit.

5. Ciutadella harbour

After exploring the old town, it is worth heading down to Ciutadella harbour.

The harbour offers a different view of the town and is one of the most pleasant places for a stroll, a drink or the end of your day.

During the day, it makes a natural continuation of a visit to the historic centre. As evening approaches, the atmosphere changes, with outdoor terraces, restaurants and boats lining your walk.

That is why, if you only have a few hours to explore Ciutadella, we recommend leaving the harbour until the final part of your route.

6. Castell de Sant Nicolau

You can extend your walk to the Castell de Sant Nicolau, at the entrance to Ciutadella harbour. Built in the late 17th century, this coastal defence tower is a way to complete your town walk beside the sea.

Walking here takes you a little further from the central streets and closer to the Mediterranean without leaving the town.

It is a good way to combine the heritage of the historic centre, the harbour and the coastal scenery in a single route.

7. Convent de Sant Agustí

Ciutadella’s historic heritage extends well beyond its cathedral.

The Convent de Sant Agustí houses the Museu Diocesà de Menorca and retains a cloister that forms part of its architectural heritage. It is an option for those who would like to spend more time exploring the town’s history and culture.

Before planning a visit inside, check the information on the Convent de Sant Agustí published by the Diocese of Menorca and confirm the visiting arrangements for your dates.

8. Palaces, squares and streets of the historic centre

To discover Ciutadella’s aristocratic heritage, look out for the façades of the Salort and Torre Saura palaces around Plaça des Born.

Their façades and the historic buildings of the old town help explain the character of Menorca’s former capital. You can admire them from the street as part of your walk; arrangements for any visits inside should be checked separately.

9. Plaça des Pins and the area around the centre

Very close to Plaça des Born, Plaça des Pins is a place for a short pause before continuing to explore Ciutadella.

This area connects easily with different parts of the centre and can be included in a circular walk starting and finishing in the historic centre.

You can use it as a break between visiting the old town and walking towards the harbour.

10. Punta Nati, a sunset near Ciutadella

This final place takes you beyond the urban area, but it can be a good way to end a day in Ciutadella.

Punta Nati lighthouse stands on Menorca’s north-west coast and is especially well known for its sunsets and surrounding scenery.

Plan this visit as a separate trip from your town walk. Before setting off, check the access arrangements and transport options available for your dates, and allow time for the journey. You can consult the information on Autocares Torres’ route to Punta Nati.

If you have a full day to visit Ciutadella, you will have time to see the main sights of the historic centre, enjoy its markets and food, and finish the day by the harbour.

In the morning, you could start in Plaça des Born, visit the Cathedral of Santa María and continue through Ses Voltes and the streets of the old town. From there, head to the Mercat des Peix and Plaça de la Llibertat before stopping for lunch in the centre.

In the afternoon, head down to Ciutadella harbour and, if you would like a longer walk, continue to the Castell de Sant Nicolau. You can finish the day in town or save sunset for a trip to Punta Nati, arranging transport separately.
