Before we get into specific plans, let me tell you something: experiencing Menorca at Christmas means discovering the island at a different pace, calmly, with tradition and with that familiar atmosphere that is so characteristic of us. If you're wondering what to do in Menorca at Christmas, here are some plans that you'll fall in love with.

1. Stroll through illuminated Ciutadella

When the Christmas lights are switched on in Menorca is a frequently asked question, and although the date varies slightly each year, it is usually in late November or early December. At Christmas 2025, for example, Ciutadella will kick off the festivities on Friday 5 December, with a sunset full of light and excitement. At 6.30 pm, the Christmas lights parade will begin, which this year will feature the travelling show Correllums, by the Mucabdans company. The parade will leave from the Can Saura Cultural Centre and will pass through: Calle del Roser Plaça de la Catedral Calle Mayor des Born Until it reaches Plaça des Born. At 7 pm, in Plaça des Born, the official switching on of the Christmas lights will take place, a very special moment that will coincide with the Christmas Market, open from 5 pm to 10 pm. It is the perfect place to start your Christmas getaway in Menorca: take a stroll, take photos, try some local products and soak up the festive atmosphere of the old town. If you are travelling in a year other than 2025, we recommend checking the updated programme of the Ajuntament de Ciutadella de Menorca before your trip to confirm the dates and times of the lighting ceremony and Christmas markets.

2. Mahón in December: History, Port and Local Atmosphere

Mahón has a very special way of celebrating Christmas: without rushing, with an authentic local atmosphere and a charm that can only be appreciated when the season is over. Strolling through its streets in December is to discover a city that combines history, tradition and calm... and if you like the sea, you will enjoy it even more here than in summer. Its port — one of the largest and most spectacular in the Mediterranean — lights up at dusk and becomes an essential place to visit at this time of year.

Things to do in Mahón at Christmas

Walk around the port at sunset.
The best time is between 5pm and 6pm, when the sun sets over the water and everything is bathed in golden tones. You can start from the Costa de Ses Voltes and continue to the Moll de Llevant area, where you will find bars and restaurants with views.
Christmas markets with local products.
From the first week of December, the Christmas market is usually set up in the centre, with Menorcan crafts, cheese, sausages, traditional sweets and handmade gifts. It's perfect for picking up an authentic souvenir or grabbing a bite to eat while you stroll around.
Concerts, theatre and activities for children.
Every year, Mahón Town Council organises cultural events in venues such as the Teatro Principal, one of the oldest theatres in Spain. In December, there are usually Christmas concerts, children's shows and workshops throughout the city.

3. Buying Christmas Lottery Tickets in Menorca

Yes, we know: buying Christmas lottery tickets in Menorca is almost a ritual for many visitors. And it does have its charm... there's something about the island that makes everyone want to take home ‘a ticket with magic’. During this time of year, the lottery offices in Mahón and Ciutadella are very lively, with queues, a festive atmosphere and a lot of excitement in the air.

Where to buy Christmas lottery tickets in Menorca

Lottery office no. 1 in Ciutadella (Plaça des Pins). One of the best known on the island. In December, it is common to see locals and visitors queuing up to get their lucky number.
Maó Lottery Office — Avenida de Josep M. Quadrado. Very central and one of the busiest in the capital. They usually have a wide variety of numbers and a very Christmassy atmosphere.
Mahon Lottery Office No. 3 (Carrer de ses Moreres). Another very popular option, especially on weekends in December. Perfect if you are strolling through the centre.

Points of sale in tobacconists and kiosks throughout the island.

If you happen to be passing by, you can also buy your ticket without having to go to a main lottery office. Many visitors take advantage of their stay to choose an ‘island’ number and take home a typical souvenir of this time of year. If you like, I'll move on to the next point.

4. Coastal routes and viewpoints (with the best climate in the Mediterranean in winter)

If you're wondering what the weather is like in Menorca in December, we'll let you in on a secret: the island enjoys one of the mildest winters in the Mediterranean. With average temperatures between 12 and 17°C, sunny days and little rain, it's ideal for walking, breathing fresh air and enjoying the island without the crowds. In December, Menorca becomes a peaceful retreat, perfect for discovering its essence and unique landscapes.
We recommend:

Camí de Cavalls (easy sections in winter)

This historic trail circles the entire island and offers quieter and more accessible routes in winter. For example, the section from Cala Galdana to Cala Mitjana is perfect for a 2-hour walk enjoying the sea and nature. If you love cycling, you can also discover the Camí de Cavalls by bike and five other incredible routes around Menorca in our guide for cyclists, so you can take home memories of the island's best landscapes.

Sa Posta de Sol viewpoint (Pont d'en Gil)

One of the most spectacular places to watch the sunset. Ideal for taking photos, enjoying the silence and contemplating the Menorcan coast in its winter version.

Cala Morell viewpoint

With views of cliffs and caves, it is a perfect plan for families and couples. You can combine it with a walk through the nearby archaeological site.

Viewpoints at Cap de Cavalleria and Favaritx

Although a little further away, these are unmissable if you want to contemplate stunning seascapes with hardly any tourists. In December, Menorca is not so much about the beach as it is about the sea. Walking along the cliffs, basking in the gentle winter sun and listening to the waves is a unique and very relaxing experience. What's more, these routes are perfect for those looking to unwind and enjoy Menorca's mild December climate without the summer crowds.

5. Discover the lighthouses with fewer people

Menorca's lighthouses are a must-see at any time of year, but at Christmas and in December you can enjoy them almost alone, with a more peaceful atmosphere and the Mediterranean Sea for company.
They are perfect places for sunset walks, photography and breathing fresh air without crowds.
Punta Nati Lighthouse
Located near Ciutadella, it is one of the most accessible lighthouses on the island. In winter, the sunset from its cliffs is spectacular, with warm colours reflecting off the sea. Wear comfortable shoes, a coat and bring your camera to capture the magic of the moment.
Cavalleria Lighthouse
Located in the north of Menorca, it is famous for its panoramic views over the rocky coastline. In December, the north wind can be strong, so wrap up warm. In addition to the views, the road to the lighthouse offers ideal trails for a light walk.
Favàritx Lighthouse
Near the s'Albufera des Grau Natural Park, its black and white tower creates a unique winter postcard. The paths around the lighthouse are less travelled in December, making it a perfect place to enjoy the tranquillity and unspoilt natural landscape.
Practical tip
At Christmas, the lighthouses are less crowded than in summer, but remember that some car parks may be limited and not all tourist services are open. Bring water, a snack and warm clothing. For the more adventurous, combine your visit with nearby routes such as Camí de Cavalls or small coves to make the most of your day.

6. Visit charming villages without the crowds

One of the biggest advantages of travelling to Menorca in December or at Christmas is that you can explore its villages in complete tranquillity, enjoying the local essence without the summer crowds. Its cobbled streets, charming squares and small shops allow you to immerse yourself in authentic Menorcan life.
We recommend:
Es Mercadal
Located at the foot of Mount Toro, the highest point in Menorca, Es Mercadal retains its traditional architecture and relaxed atmosphere. In December, you can visit its local market and sample typical winter products such as sausages, cheeses and Christmas sweets.
Fornells
Famous for its fishing port and sea views, Fornells is ideal for leisurely strolls. During Christmas, some terraces and restaurants prepare special menus and activities for families, offering the opportunity to try authentic Menorcan cuisine.
Sant Lluís
Known for its French heritage, Sant Lluís retains a unique charm with decorated squares and quiet streets. In December, cultural events and small markets are held where you can find local products and Christmas crafts.
Es Castell
This small fishing village near Mahón is perfect for enjoying a stroll by the sea and seeing how it lights up during the Christmas season. Craft markets and carol concerts are organised in its streets, ideal for getting into the Christmas spirit.
Practical tip
At the end of December, many towns organise markets, exhibitions and activities for children. It's the perfect time to take a leisurely stroll, take photos and buy unique Christmas gifts. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and warm clothing, especially if you plan to walk near the harbour or around the squares.

7. Enjoy Menorcan cuisine at its most welcoming

Travelling to Menorca in December also means savouring the island at its most authentic. At this time of year, local restaurants remain open and offer seasonal dishes that give Christmas and winter a special flavour.

What to try at Christmas

  • Lobster stew: a Menorcan classic, although remember that availability may be limited in winter, so it's worth booking in advance!
  • Carn i xua: a traditional dish combining meat and seasonal vegetables, perfect for warming you up on cooler days.
  • Typical winter berries: homemade sweets and snacks that sweeten walks through the villages and Christmas markets.
  • Cured Mahón-Menorca cheese: ideal for accompanying local wines and enjoying the authentic essence of the island.
If you want to take the gastronomic experience further, we recommend visiting Sagitario Llocs: our farms, your flavour. There, the Triay-Amorós family manages five traditional farms where they grow seasonal fruit and vegetables, raise their own livestock and produce Mahón-Menorca D.O.P. cheese, all directly from the field to the table. Fresh, local ingredients bring our hotels' dishes to life, creating a gastronomic experience with a Menorcan soul that you can enjoy even during your Christmas getaway.

8. Unique sunrises on 24, 25 and 31 December

If there is one thing that makes travelling to Menorca at Christmas special, it is the sunrises. The island, with its clear, serene light, offers unique moments that you will find hard to forget.
24 December
Sunrise in Menorca is peaceful and almost magical. If you get up a little early, you can stroll along the coast or the Camí de Cavalls trails while the sun reflects off the sea and cliffs. It's the perfect moment to feel the calm before Christmas.
25 December
Sunrise in Menorca is even more special. No traffic, no crowds, just silence broken only by birdsong and the waves of the Mediterranean. Ideal for enjoying a family walk or simply contemplating the beauty of the sea in winter.
31 December
If you want to see out the year in a different way, the sunrise on 31 December in Menorca is an experience not to be missed. The golden light over the beaches and villages creates the perfect setting to reflect on the year that is ending and start the next one with positive energy. Few people know that Menorca is one of the first places in Spain to receive daylight, which makes these sunrises even more unique. If you decide to experience them, don't forget to bring your camera or mobile phone: you'll want to capture the magic of these moments that combine sea, sky and tranquillity.
