Every drop counts: our commitment to responsible water management in Menorca
Responsible water management in Menorca hotels is part of Sagitario Hotels’ environmental commitment. In this article, we share specific, verified measures: smart irrigation systems, water reuse, consumption monitoring, ISO 14001 certification and ways for guests to support responsible water use during their stay.

From the first steps taken by our founders, Sagitario Hotels has grown with a clear conviction: welcoming people to Menorca also means caring for the island that makes every stay possible. That respect for its landscape and natural resources continues to shape the way we understand hospitality.
That commitment continues to guide our decisions today. Sustainable Sagitario brings together initiatives related to energy, water, circularity, waste, biodiversity and the participation of both guests and our teams.
Water management is a priority because it is fundamental to Menorca’s environmental, social and economic balance. We communicate each measure with its confirmed scope, without generalising actions that apply only to a particular hotel.
From 23 to 27 August 2026, World Water Week 2026, organised by the Stockholm International Water Institute, brings together specialists and organisations under the theme “Water for People and Progress”. The event connects water security with human wellbeing, territorial resilience and sustainable progress.
World Water Week 2026 provides a useful framework for explaining how we turn that commitment into practical measures linked to each property.
Five properties—Sagitario Princesa Playa, Gran Sagitario, Petit Sagitario, Sagitario Menorca Mar and Sagitario Playa—use smart irrigation systems adapted to their landscaped areas.
These five properties also have dual-flush toilets and filters and/or flow regulators on taps and showers. These systems help prevent unnecessary consumption during everyday water use while maintaining guest comfort.
17,799 m² of gardens with smart irrigation
At Sagitario Princesa Playa, a smart system manages irrigation across 11,974 m² of landscaped areas and helps optimise water use throughout the resort.
Some garden areas have been transformed into dry gardens using local island stone and native species with very low water requirements. This reduces irrigation needs and creates landscaping that is better adapted to local conditions.
The hotel reuses reject water generated by its reverse-osmosis system and recovers water from swimming-pool backwashing for use in irrigating its green areas.
These actions form part of the improvement areas supported by BGreenMenorca 2024. Through the programme, Gran Sagitario, Sagitario Menorca Mar, Sagitario Princesa Playa, Sagitario Playa and Petit Sagitario have received support for projects related to sustainable green areas and water efficiency, financed by the Consell Insular de Menorca through the Menorca Biosphere Reserve Agency.
At Gran Sagitario, surplus water from reverse-osmosis production is reused to supply toilet cisterns. Gran Sagitario and Petit Sagitario have greywater reuse systems. Both properties also have zoned water meters that allow internal consumption to be monitored daily.
At Sagitario Menorca Mar, reject water generated by the reverse-osmosis system is reused to irrigate its 2,600 m² of gardens, which are managed using smart irrigation.
Confirmed measures by property
Sagitario Princesa Playa, Gran Sagitario and Petit Sagitario hold ISO 14001 environmental certification and have circularity plans.
At these three hotels, the environmental management system and circularity plans help organise and assess actions related to energy consumption, responsible water management, waste and active team participation.
The certification supports a working method based on identifying impacts, setting objectives, monitoring progress and pursuing continuous improvement. You can review the published scope of our environmental certifications.
The option to avoid unnecessary bed-linen changes turns an everyday choice into more responsible use of both water and energy. This initiative is available at Sagitario Princesa Playa, Gran Sagitario, Petit Sagitario, Sagitario Menorca Mar and Sagitario Playa.
Results accumulated up to August 2026
For Sagitario Menorca Mar and Sagitario Playa, washing-machine-load and litre equivalents are not published because those data are not monitored using the same methodology.
We also invite guests at these five properties to support responsible water use through four simple recommendations:
Four simple ways to help
Responsible textile reuse is also central to Cambio que Navega, our initiative connecting water savings with marine research. Reusing a pool towel helps reduce the number of washes and the associated consumption of water and energy.
According to the latest report published by the Govern de les Illes Balears, based on July 2026 data, Menorca has 34% water reserves and remains in pre-alert status. We therefore continue to monitor our measures and provide useful, measured information to the people who stay with us.
Information reviewed on 26 August 2026. Water conditions and municipal measures may change. We recommend checking the Balearic Islands Water Portal and official communications from the Ciutadella de Menorca City Council.
We appreciate the monitoring and communication work carried out by sector organisations and local authorities in relation to Menorca’s water situation.
Sagitario Princesa Playa, Gran Sagitario and Petit Sagitario hold ISO 14001 environmental certification. It forms part of a management system designed to assess environmental impacts, set objectives and make progress through continuous improvement.
These five properties use smart irrigation, dual-flush toilets and filters and/or flow regulators on taps and showers. Other measures—such as water reuse, zoned metering and dry gardens—apply to specific hotels according to their infrastructure.
Not necessarily. Some measures are shared across these five properties, while others respond to the characteristics and infrastructure of an individual hotel. For transparency, each action is communicated only with the scope that has been confirmed for it.
Choosing shorter showers, turning off taps when they are not needed, reusing towels and reporting leaks or drips to Reception all help avoid unnecessary consumption without compromising comfort.
Responsible water management requires continuity, monitoring and transparency. That is why each statement we publish is connected to a documented action, an existing system, a validated result or an active initiative.
We will continue updating this information as new validated data and confirmed measures become available for each property.
Every drop counts. Together, we care for Menorca.
